Whether you’re making it for a weekend family meal or a special occasion, this homemade fish curry recipe is simple, delicious, and full of flavor.

Ingredients for Fish Curry

For the fish:

  • 500g fresh fish (rohu, pomfret, or any firm variety)

  • 1 tsp turmeric powder

  • Salt to taste

  • 2 tbsp oil (for shallow frying)

For the curry:

  • 2 tbsp mustard oil (or regular cooking oil)

  • 1 large onion, finely chopped

  • 2 medium tomatoes, chopped

  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste

  • 2–3 green chilies, slit

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1 tsp turmeric powder

  • 1½ tsp coriander powder

  • 1 tsp red chili powder (adjust to taste)

  • 1 tsp garam masala

  • Salt to taste

  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped

  • 2 cups water

How to Make Fish Curry

Step 1 – Marinate and Fry the Fish

  1. Wash the fish pieces well and pat dry.

  2. Marinate with turmeric powder and salt.

  3. Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan and lightly fry the fish pieces until golden on each side. Set aside.

Step 2 – Prepare the Curry Base

  1. In the same pan, add mustard oil and heat until slightly smoky (this enhances flavor).

  2. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.

  3. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.

  4. Stir in ginger-garlic paste and green chilies, sauté for a minute.

  5. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until soft and oil separates.

Step 3 – Add Spices and Simmer

  1. Mix turmeric, coriander powder, and red chili powder into the onion-tomato mixture.

  2. Add water and let it come to a boil.

  3. Gently add the fried fish pieces into the curry.

  4. Cover and cook on low flame for 8–10 minutes so the fish absorbs the flavors.

  5. Sprinkle garam masala and garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve hot with steamed basmati rice for a classic combination.

  • It also pairs beautifully with chapati, paratha, or dosa.

Tips for the Best Fish Curry

  • Always use fresh fish for the best flavor.

  • Don’t overcook the fish, or it will break apart.

  • Mustard oil adds an authentic touch, but you can use regular oil if preferred.

Conclusion

A bowl of warm, aromatic fish curry is pure comfort food. This recipe is easy enough for beginners yet flavorful enough to impress guests. With the right balance of spices and fresh fish, you’ll have a dish that everyone will love.
