Ingredients
For Daal:

1 cup lentils (moong, masoor, or a mix)

4 cups water

1 medium onion (finely chopped)

2 tomatoes (chopped)

2 green chilies (slit)

1 teaspoon turmeric powder

1 teaspoon cumin seeds

1 teaspoon red chili powder

½ teaspoon garam masala

1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste

Salt to taste

2 tablespoons oil or ghee

Fresh coriander leaves (for garnish)




For Chawal (Rice):

1.5 cups basmati rice

3 cups water

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon oil

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Rice

Rinse the basmati rice thoroughly and soak it in water for 15–20 minutes.

In a pot, bring 3 cups of water to a boil. Add salt and oil.

Drain the soaked rice and add it to the boiling water.

Cover and cook on medium heat until the water is absorbed and the rice is fluffy.

Set aside.


Step 2: Cook the Daal

Rinse the lentils and soak them for 15 minutes.

In a pot, heat oil or ghee and add cumin seeds. Let them splutter.

Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.

Add ginger-garlic paste and cook until the raw smell disappears.

Stir in chopped tomatoes, green chilies, turmeric, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes soften.

Add the lentils and water. Mix well and let it simmer for 20–25 minutes until the lentils are soft.

Mash slightly for a creamy consistency and add garam masala.
